ARENA DISTRICT - The Arrowhawks opened the winter session by defeating a highly-skilled Discover team 4-3 Friday. The game began with 3 unanswered goals from the Hawks but quickly became a close fought game after 2 consecutive Discover goals. Leading the Hawks scoring was Tom Morgan with 2 beautiful wristers from the high slot. The first was a nifty number, with Morgan stealing the puck in the offensive zone and scoring unassisted top-shelf. The second goal, coming 9 seconds later in the first period, was assisted by top line center Mark Monahan and RW Jason Torsok.
"We were off to a fast start," said Joe Factor, a key contributor in both zones and +1 on the night. "But you have to give Discover credit for not giving up. They skated fast, clogged the zone and proved why they are a team to be reckoned with." he added.
Through 2 periods, the score was 3-2 Hawks. The game was tight with both teams notching good scoring chances. Nate Mensel was stellar with his patented offensive touch, setting up scoring chances. Not to be outdone, Barry Snow contributed on both sides of the blue line and added the game winner with a blue-line slap shot at the 5:44 mark of the third period.
"Barry had several scoring chances tonight," said Mark Monahan after the game."He played awesome."
The Hawks played a spirited opener against a good opponent. Although they gave up 2 short-handed goals, they were pleased with the result.
"Jensen kept us in it," said John Kenyon. "It's good to know we have the leagues best goalie in our net."
Yes, it is.
