DUBLIN, OH - Friday's game between the C2 league leaders was all it was touted to be as the fall session champion Eskimos battled the Arrowhawks for first place. The game was back and forth with the Mo's drawing first blood in the opening minute, behind a dandy individual effort by Kobs, #5, a shifty forward with mad skill. Objectively the Hawks should have fallen behind early as they started slow again. Once again it was Jason Jensen keeping the Hawks in the game, turning many shots aside until the Hawks got their legs under them, eventually winning in a tight 3-2 overtime shootout.
"Jason was stellar again," said LW Tom Morgan after the game. "He kept us in it early until we found our rhythm." Jensen proved once again he is the league's best goalie.
"It's easy to play in front of a goalie as good as Jay," said Oleg Chetverikov, the Hawks lone Ukrainian utility forward/defenseman. Oleg manned the blueline, filling in for Nick Lanctot who was scratched on the night due to internal team discipline.
"Nick argued with the team's marketing department over a photo he didn't like, but we're going to keep it in house because that's what good team's do," said an anonymous Hawk after the game. "He wanted some extensive photoshop work done and the team was over budget and he didn't like the fact that he looked apathetic in the image." he added.
Jason Torsok, Terry Walker and Kevin Griffith weren't able to play due to injury. Mike Gauthier also missed the game due to a cruise ship in the Caribbean malfunctioning and his helicopter not being able to land due to the overflowing bathrooms.
"There was a massive stench and I couldn't stand the smell," said the pilot. "I've been trained in the army for all sorts of things, but not this. I didn't want to get the bird dirty," he said.
Arrowhawk captain Mark Monahan was awesome in both zones as usual. The Hawks ran two lines of forwards and two lines of defense against the skilled Eskimos, a nemesis of late.
"They've had our number recently," said Bryce Griffith. "It was good to get the monkey off our backs and win one. They are a great team." he added
Prized free-agent acquisition Bryan Wharton rejoined the Hawks for Friday's tilt. He was fantastic winning draws when needed and controlling play when it mattered. In the end it was Wharton's blistering shootout goal that iced the win for the Hawks, sending the Mo's packing.
Jensen turned all three shooters away, including an amazing stick save on league-leading goal scorer Matthew Kobs on the first shootout attempt. The save had the crowd on its feet, whistling in amazement. Even Kobs was in disbelief at Jensen's save. It was the type of save the Hawks have grown accustomed to during their run with him in net.
The victory moved the Hawks to a single point away from the top seed heading into the playoffs.
Mac Lawless and Ted Bulwinkle were flawless on the blueline. Lawless unleashed a blast from the high slot that would have scored if it didn't hit Arrowhawk winger Rick Titus square in the shin late in the game.
"The goalie was beat and I was celebrating when it left my stick," said a disappointed Lawless. "Titus zigged when he should have zagged and I don't feel sorry for the welt on his leg." added the gangly d-man.
"It hurt like a mother but I'll just throw a steak on it tonight," said me. "I had a picture in my head of screening their really tall goalie and not having it drill me, but oh well," I said. I think.
Of the 3,000 photos I don't have any on this computer of us playing the Mo's with our black sweaters. So I've just added these of random Mo's.
Have a great Easter weekend, everyone. Peace! That means you, Kim Jung Un you bastard. Stop the sabre rattling and resist the urge to pick a fight you can't win. A million casualties in the first three weeks isn't good for business. Nor is a nuclear battle you can't win. It's like efforting a shootout against Jason Jensen, ill-advised.
