Hawks open with win over Mamas

LEWIS CENTER, OH - It wasn't easy folks, but the Arrowhawks opened the summer session with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over a pesky Mamas and Papas team. The Hawks shot and shot and shot some more but couldn't drive one past the Mamas and Papas goaltender for most the night. Ironically, it was when the Mamas were on the power play they were most vulnerable.

The first goal was scored short handed by Mark Monahan late in the first period. He won the draw and fired a low wrist shot past the Mamas goalie. The second goal was scored shortly into the second period (if memory serves) by St. Joe's alumn, Tom Morgan, also short handed.

"Sometimes the puck just goes that way," said Morgan after the game. The Mamas capitolized on a power-play advantage in the second to make the game tight, 2-1.

"They got lucky and slid one past Andrew," said right wing and usual goalie Jason Jensen. "Andrew didn't face many shots early and he was screened on the play," he added.

The Mamas didn't register a shot for the first 9 minutes of play.

The Hawks rolled two lines tonight. Missing from the lineup was leading goal scorer, Bryce Griffith; his brother and top-line center Kevin Griffith; Joe Factor and Chris 'Jesus was a' Carpenter (sorry Chris that one's gonna stick -- we decided at the bar).

For the record, Carp didn't register a point in the game. Also for the record, neither did returning all-star forward, Rick Titus and his new all black attire in honor of John Kenyon, a regular who's sitting out the session for the first time in 2 years.

"Titus played well tonight," said captain Mark Monahan. "Except when he went flying into our own net. We couldn't figure that defensive strategy out" he added.

Tom Morgan finished the scoring late in the third period on a great individual effort with the goalie pulled.

"There was a lot of lumber coming my way," admitted Morgan. "I just rifled it in there."

Terry Walker and Barry Snow were stellar defensively. So was Mike Gauthier and the swift skating Nick Lanctot who continually carried the puck setting up Hawk skaters.

Total shots were Hawks 27 and Mamas 13 (OK I made that up but it seems right).

In her Arrowhawk debut, Emily Moersdorf was terrific in both zones. Skating between power forwards Jason Jensen and Rick Titus, she helped provide balance to a short bench.

"We played fairly well tonight for our first game," said Monahan. "The Mamas played well too and we're happy to get the win."

Next up is CS Bank. Damn Eskimos.
