Frozen Flashback: Delbarton claims victory in the game finally played

After 21 years as co-champions, the 1989 Delbarton and St. Joseph high school hockey teams finally settled the score on the state championship they never had the chance to play due to a measles outbreak.

Delbarton took home the win, 3-2, after a hard fought game that quickly went from "no contact" to "full contact" Saturday afternoon at the Mennen Arena in Morristown.

Goals were scored by Delbarton's Mike Pendy of Far Hills, Peter Ramsey of Summit, and Jeff Gorman of Mount Olive. St. Joe's goals were scored by Kevin Kamenski of Cedar Grove.

But the game wasn't only about bragging rights.

Together, the two teams managed to raise about $200,000 for charities like the Valerie Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides support to children with cancer and blood disorders; Jam for Janice, a private fund established for Janice Williams, a lifelong hockey mom who has been battling cancer since 2006; and the NHL's Hockey Fights Cancer, a charitable initiative that raises money and awareness for cancer care and research.
